As a certified speech language pathologist I am uniquely trained to teach the sounds and rhythm of English to individuals who speak English as a second language. I have worked in the field of accent training since 2014 and have now worked with hundreds of individuals from all over the world. I have a deep understanding of the sounds of English that you will need to work on in order to improve your clarity and confidence.
Beyond the sounds of English, an essential part of speaking more clearly is to learn the rhythm of English. I have the skills and experience to break down the components for the rhythm of English into teachable concepts.
My teaching approach has developed out of my education as a speech language pathologist, my experience in the field, self guided study, and conferences in this area of study. I use a technique called the Principles of Motor Learning to help individuals acquire strong habits for speech production. I break concepts and skills down to the level needed for each individual and then build those skills into more complex situations in order to maximize learning. I organize the material and steps needed to build confident speech into very easy to follow and clear lessons. I also emphasize the importance of developing listening skills and provide material to gain the skills necessary to really hear the components of English that each person needs to improve on.

What you can expect in working with me as a trainer:
I do a full speech evaluation for each person with whom I work. This helps me to understand each individuals’ strengths and weaknesses and to plan their course of learning in the most effective way.

Why work with a trainer?:
There is a lot of free information available online for learning about English and pronunciation. You can easily spend hours surfing through videos. This can be helpful if you know what you need, what to look for, how to make sure the information is from a credible source, and that when you practice you are getting the skill correct. For most of the people that I work with they either don’t have the time to spend searching online and piecing together the information they need; they don’t have the awareness of what skills they need to target; and they don’t have the skills to know if they are actually getting it right when they practice.
Working with a trainer who is highly skilled, trained, and certified in working on speech production will save you a lot of time, frustration, and confusion. I organize the material for you, it is fully individualized, I break down the information into teachable/learnable steps, I give you individualized feedback about your performance, I teach you how to practice, I give you material to practice, and I use evidence based strategies to maximize the effectiveness of your time/effort/and practice.
There are a lot of trainers that you can find online. It can be a little overwhelming to search through the websites of all the people claiming that they can teach the American English Accent. When I have been searching through those websites, the most important thing I look for is credentials. What makes that person capable to do this work? Some people are upfront about their training, but most are not. Unfortunately there is no governing body overseeing this field and anyone can hang a shingle and call themselves an accent trainer.
2. A fully certified speech-language pathologist is highly trained to work on modifying speech, building strong speech habits, and structuring a program that will be successful based on the current evidence. I have been working as a speech-language pathologist since 2002 and have extensive experience in working on speech skills.
Speech recognition software and apps for working on pronunciation and language are growing everyday. Why not just use those?
3. Computer based programs can be a useful tool and can help a learner maximize practice efficiency and accuracy. However, computer based programs lack the ability to assess and teach rhythm, use of speech skills in conversation, and do not provide detailed and individualized help for correction of mistakes. They also do not incorporate listening skills enough.
